OUGD502 - Studio Brief 3 - Final PPP Presentation and Notes

Final Presentation and Notes

Who am I

Hard wording - put effort into things
Like learning new things - whether this be techniques, processes , materials or new information etc
Problem Solver – like figuring things out and working out concepts
Motivated – will spend time on things to get things right

Practice / Interests

Functional  - like making work that you can do something with such as my calendar, pencil pots , journals, games

Type – like experimental type and modular type which I looked at in COP last year

Three Dimensional - like the tangibility of physical work. I find this sort of work more engaging and interactive such as the board game I collaborated on

Not too much screen

Materials - like finding out the different possibilities and qualities that can be achieved with them. Enjoy using both found and new materials.

Photography – always had interest in this in particular macro photography which becomes quite abstract. This helped create the Book Covers

Experimentation – like experimenting with different techniques and processes to create interesting visuals such as the photocopier and photography for the Book Covers

Maker – like working physically to create something and like hand making things

Bookbinding – do this in my spare time

Points about briefs

Short briefs – enjoyed doing these as they were much looser and less pressure so I was more experimental. Ended up using found things, photography and other processes to create a range of visuals. Structuring it so did part of process each day meant I was able to do each part of the design process and come out with some refined outcomes.

Long briefs – sometimes hard to go back to after doing the shorter briefs because they were more work. However there was more thought and meaning behind concepts and I was able to develop things further.

Feedback – sometimes I work on ideas and variations too much which makes it difficult to see what is working. Having feedback has helped give direction to work again and made it easier to make decisions on how to go forward.

Research – has given substance to experimentation and concepts and led to me being more informed when designing especially for last project. Having background knowledge for the concept has made the design have more meaning

Interests and Topics

Things of interest and topics -  themes that I have found during the year that I am drawn to

Nature and the environment – always enjoyed being in and taking pictures of nature this idea of nature influenced City Patch Project which looked at green spaces in cities

Reclaimed and Reused materials – I enjoy challenge of making something out of something else and making it functional and unique. Enjoy finding materials at salvage shows etc. The theme of reclaimed materials influenced my website design which would allow people to buy and sell reclaimed materials.

Tools – enjoy making creative tools that people use to be creative, learn about design or aid experimentation. Last year in COP I created a booklet of grid systems for creating modular type. The process of creativity interesting which I have looked at in COP this year through a research tool to aid idea generation.

Experimentation – enjoy different processes and techniques e.g. lasercutting, the photocopier etc

Learnt

More about what I like – and that these are not always part of graphic design

Balance between interests – I need to try and combine interests into something e.g. love for reclaimed materials, reuse , making, finding design and design tools.

Step away from things – feel most productive when physically creating. Also need to take a step back from things when things aren’t working to help move forward.

New processes and techniques – learnt new processes such as fabric printing, vinyl sticker everything

The Pitch

The Pitch - enjoyed working in a group as we split the workload and delegated well. Pitching with someone else allowed us to bounce off one another. Having lots of images gave us things to talk about and look at which guided us more through the presentation.

Creative Report

Still a working progress. I have contacted a variety of people which are not all strictly graphic design but relevant to what I enjoy. It has been very difficult to get replies with no full responses yet. However it was interesting researching the different people and made me consider things that I enjoy.

Typographers
Contacted:
- Barry Spencer who is a speculative type designer and has written a book on his research and  reconsiders what type is. This heavily influenced COP last year.
- Handmade fonts who create experimental types to buy
- Radim Malanic whose recent three dimensional branding uses interesting materials to create type.

Design led Shops - like the functional aspect of design and creative tools for designers. Also like finding and sourcing design and may possibly like to start my own business.
Contacted Colours May Vary, Papersmiths, Present and Correct, Choosing and Keeping

Three Dimensional Design and Making
Peg and Awl – use reclaimed materials to make all their designs - e.g.bags, office products, bookbinding - which is something I like to experiment with also
Another Studio – create products inspired by nature and architecture. They use different materials to create three dimensional designs e.g. models , pop up cards , page markers etc

Summer / Future / Ambitions

Over the summer need to rest and go away. I will start thinking about / develop an online shop. I'd like to work for myself in the future so start up Wednesdays next year could help with the business side of this. A studio is perhaps not for me at the moment however I have tried to get in contact with a few smaller studios such as Split and Passport. Being in a smaller studio I might prefer more because its more personal. I also need to do COP over the Summer.
