Creative Report Initial Ideas / Sketches
Using definitions of words from the passage on Splits website various layouts were considered.
To reflect the idea of complexity being a state with different parts connected in a complicated way, it was considered that the questions and answers for the interview could be connected with lines. Placing the responses and questions in a scattered way across a page then joining the information with lines would allow the reader to make the connection between the information. Having multiple questions and answers on a double spread could create a sense of complexity. Having only one question and answer on a page would allow the information to be clearer.
If something splits it is divided into two or more parts. Using this concept it was considered that the grid system could be used to add a strip of negative space through an image, therefore splitting it in two. Wide gutters would create more pronounced ‘splits’ between information. This could be once, which would split the page into two or multiple times. Horizontally, vertically and diagonally splitting the page would create different segments. Imagery could be placed as full bleed images but a section of white would go through it dividing the image in two or more. Text could also follow the shapes created by the 'splits'.
It was considered that the logo of Split studio could be used as a way of placing text and imagery. Placing something in each of the shapes would create strips of imagery and text, almost like a collage. Using the different strips it was also thought that these could be positioned across the double spread so that the design contains the elements of the original logo however they have been split up across the page.
It was also considered that full bleed imagery could be used on one side of the page and a strip could be taken out of this, reflecting the shape of one of the pieces from the logo. This section would then be transferred onto the opposite page. Where part of the image has been taken out this would allow imagery to be placed. Alternately it was considered that a section could be taken out of the image and text filled, and a similar text box would continue onto the next page. This would create a text shape across the page that would reflect the 'split', splitting the image and negative space on the page.
