Creative Report Evaluation
Doing the creative report has made me think about the things I am interested in and the possible routes that could be taken. I have found that working in the industry does not necessarily mean working in a big studio and have found that graphic design encompasses more than this. I have found that I have other areas of interest that I would perhaps like to explore further and bring more into my Graphic Design Practice such as product design, creating creative tools, reclaimed materials and experimental typography. Also the idea of starting a design led business is a possible interest and the process of sourcing products or creating products for this is of interest so contacting design led shops as well as designers was important. The task itself I found quite difficult to do, as very few people got back to me, which was quite frustrating, particularly when time is spent researching designers and businesses. To make the process beneficial I wanted to contact people whose practice has an element of similarity to my own. The process of finding people was quite difficult as initially I was quite particular about who I wanted to contact and the fields they were in. I found that contacting studios and businesses on their main company email was less likely to get a response and that finding a person within the studio or business and contacting them was likely to get more of a response. Sending focused questions to people meant that they could then expand on their answers and having fewer questions meant they were more likely to respond. As I didn't have many responses to initial emails from the first few people I contacted this meant I had to diversify who I was trying to contact. The process of doing the creative report made me consider different areas that I was interested in in order to get a response. In hindsight meeting people face to face would have led to more
Radhika was very understanding and forthcoming when answering questions as she understood the difficulty that there can be when trying to get people to respond. She has said that if I need any other help with projects or have further questions that I can keep in contact for more advice. This could also be useful for possible work experience as working in a small studio would be of more interest to me rather than a larger studio if I choose to do this. In the future I would like to set up my own design led business so feedback from Colours May Vary was also helpful. They said that finding a niche is important rather than trying to copy what others are doing and to not assume that other peoples businesses are successful. This niche will be the thing that makes me stand out. Keeping in contact with Colours May Vary could be useful if I develop any products as they could be a potential place to sell work. Although not everyone got back to me with replies I did get through to some of them so this also means their is now a starting point for further conversations.
