Typogateux
For Typogateaux this year a group of us made churros, which some of the group had tasted in Barcelona last year. The title of the piece, Futchurro, was a play on words combining both Futura the typeface and Churro the food.
The Churros were made in the deep fat fryer, with a lot of trial and error. Initially we piped the mixture directly onto the metal basket, making sure the different strokes overlapped to create letters. When these were put into the deep fat fryer, however when they heated up they kept separating at the joins. We found that prodding the joins stuck the mixture line together better when put into the deep fat frier meaning that the letters cam out whole.
Extras were made with a chocolate dipping sauce to dunk the churros in.
The cakes were marked on their inside and outside characteristics, so had to taste good not just look good.
There were more submissions this year so we were really happy to get third prize. All of the Churros were gone at the end of the morning so people must have enjoyed them.
We were given a print and pen as our prize.
What was interesting about Typogateux:
- There were a few designs that were interactive and weren't just cakes to look at which was clever. This design was a mini screen printing kit made from biscuit. The idea encourages people to engage with it, which makes it a memorable submission as well as relating back to processes we use within graphic design.
- Making something physical and with a different material is always exciting and comes with its own challenges. Cake as a subject is a fun and tasty alternative to normal briefs!
- There were also some clever graphic design inspired puns and jokes.
- This one took the hex code for red to describe Rudolphs nose.
- Whilst the simplicity of the bake in this entry was made funny by the link to typeface tittles.
